Try Climbing and Rappelling

This is a perfect way to sample some climbing and rappelling in West Virginia’s New River Gorge for the first time. You'll learn basic techniques by spending approximately two hours rock climbing and two hours rappelling. All climbing equipment and transportation is provided. No previous experience required.

Half day climbing/ rappelling - $75.00 (minimum 2)

Basic Rock Climbing

Our basic one day course emphasizes techniques for rock climbing in their infinite variety - cracks, chimneys, face and friction moves. You'll learn modern rope and equipment management in order to climb some of the classic routes in West Virginia’s New River Gorge. Hard Rock Climbing Services provides all climbing equipment, deli style lunch, transportation to and from the climbing site and our highly experienced guides will ensure you of a safe and exciting day of rock climbing in the New River Gorge. No previous experience required.

Learn the Ropes

This course is for the beginner to advanced climber who want to take their climbing and safety skills to the next level. Learn to belay, set up top ropes, improve climbing movement, or lead climb. We can custom tailor our "Learn the Ropes" trip to your groups needs. No experience required, but a thirst for climbing and safety knowledge is a must!

Hire a Belay

Hire a Hard Rock Climbing Guide to belay and show you the myriad of high quality routes scattered throughout West Virginia’s New River Gorge. From 5.3 to 5.14 the gorge has a plethora of classic top-rope, sport and traditional climbs to be explored. Kick back and let us take care of everything from transportation to lunch. You will climb more classics in a day than you can handle.

Advanced Rock Climbing

Climbing is an activity that demands a progressive understanding of a wide matrix of skills. This course is designed to improve your technical ability along with increased understanding and competence of climbing through skills such as efficient movement, hardware selection and route finding. The day includes all climbing equipment, deli style lunch, transportation and a great deal of the best rock climbing in West Virginia, if not the nation.

2 Hour Rappel

This two hour trip is fantastic for people who have limited time and still want to experience the beauty of the New River Gorge. Rappel over a 100 foot cliff while being surrounded by our incredibly beautiful mountains and the New River Gorge Bridge at your side. Absolutely breathtaking!

2 hours of rappelling $40.00 per person (minimum 2 people)
2 hours of rappelling $80.00 for one-on-one

Technical and Lead Courses

Traditional Lead Climbing

This course is designed for climbers who want to expand their knowledge of placing gear on traditional lead climbs. Equipment selection, fixed gear evaluation, rope management, and setting up sound anchors at the end of a pitch will be covered in this course.

Multi-Pitch Climbing

The multi-pitch climbing course is for those who have traditional leading skills and want to take their climbing to the next level. Rope management, route finding, belaying multiple climbers at once and techniques to make your multi-pitch climbing more efficient are just a few topics that will be covered in this course.

Self Rescue

This two day course covers such topics as knots, friction hitches, basic hauling systems, and rescuing the injured leader or second to safety by ascending or lowering them.

Sport Climbing Clinic

Tired of top roping? Or do you want to translate the skills you learned in the gym to real rock? You can do all of this as well as climb next to one of West Virginia’s most beautiful lakes, Summersville Lake. Enjoy a peaceful and scenic hike in, before experiencing a full day of clipping bolts with one of our knowledgeable guides. Learning to lead can be a challenge, but with our guides you can master this skill safely, while taking in one of the most incredible views on the east coast.
